Paint put over loose, chalky or damp material will not survive that, so our exterior jobs begin with washing, scraping, sanding, new caulking and primer on any bare wood. The finish coats are the short part.

We paint wood and fibre-cement siding, trim boards, soffits, fascia, porches, railings, shutters, window frames, front doors and garage doors. The season here is shorter than further south: we work on dry days once temperatures stay above the minimum on the can, which in a normal year runs from late spring into early fall.

Common questions about exterior painting.

Which months can you paint outside in Barrie?+

Usually late spring through early fall. The day has to be dry, the surface and the air both need to stay above the minimum on the paint label (often 10°C, lower for some products), and there must be no rain due while the coat cures.

How many years should an exterior paint job last?+

There is no single number. Careful prep, a good product, a lighter colour and a sheltered wall all add years; skipped prep and full sun take them away. Walls facing south and west, and anything near the ground where snow piles up, wear first.

Is the house washed first?+

Always. Older or soft wood is washed by hand or at low pressure, so the grain is not torn up and water is not driven in behind the siding.

What if the old paint contains lead?+

Assume it does in a house built before 1960, and treat it as possible up to about 1990. We work lead-safe: wet scraping, containing the debris and a thorough clean-up. We will go over this with you at the estimate.

Should someone be home while you work outside?+

There is no need. We do need an outdoor tap and a power outlet, and we ask you to keep nearby windows shut while we are working on that side.
