Texture sprayed on before roughly 1990 may contain asbestos. In a house of that age we advise sending a sample to a lab before anyone scrapes. A positive result means the removal has to be carried out by an asbestos abatement contractor under Ontario's rules. A clear result means we can go ahead.
The room is closed off with plastic and the floors and walls are covered. The texture is dampened and scraped, then the ceiling is skim-coated and sanded flat. If the texture has been painted, or scraping would tear the drywall, we skim over it instead. Primer and ceiling paint finish the job.
